This lot contains a USS Macon dirigible cover (not flown) from October 28, 1934, as described below. The postmarks and cachets commemorate the passing of the USS Macon over various locations or Navy ships. As the USS Macon and USS Akron were military vessels, little, if any, mail was carried after the first few flights of the Akron in 1932 and four flights - two in 1933 and two in 1934 - by the Macon.  

This cover commemorates the 26th flight of the USS Macon from Moffett Field around the San Francisco Bay Area for Navy Day, 27, 1934.  This cover was cancelled the next day.  Moffett Field is located in Sunnyvale, CA; the city gave the land to the Navy for the Naval Air Station.                        

 Cover included:

10/28/1934 Sunnyvale cancel with Julius Hulff cachet.  This cover is not listed in Ullmann/Mellone's; however an identical cover postmarked the 27th is listed (See my other items).  In fact, there are no covers listed for the 28th.  The cover is addressed to the cachet-maker's Burbank Cover Service.                    

Condition is as shown in the pics.  The cover has a sealed flap and shows minimal toning - it is in quite nice shape.  It does have a 1 cm tear at bottom left.               

Ullmann/Mellone's reports 25 of the Oct 27th covers made and values that cover at  $85.00.
