Description and history
Obverse (side shown in the image): Represents a view of the fountain, with the statue of Neptune at the top, surrounded by various mythological figures, puttis on top of sea creatures, as well as the second coat of arms of the city of Nuremberg under laurel branches. The circular inscription says: "DER NEPTUNBRUNNEN ZU NÜRNBERG" (The fountain of Neptune in Nuremberg).
Reverse (not visible): Contains an inscription of eight lines surrounded by a laurel wreath, which translates as: "IN MEMORY OF THE INAUGURATION OF THE FOUNTAIN OF NEPTUNE OCTOBER 22, 1902".
History of the fountain: The original of the monumental baroque fountain, considered the largest north of the Alps, was created between 1660 and 1668, but was never installed in Nuremberg for financial reasons. It was sold to Russia in 1797 and is now at the Peterhof Palace near St. Petersburg. The fountain depicted on the medal is a bronze replica, financed by patron Ludwig Gerngros, which was installed on the main market square of Nuremberg in 1902.
