1973 Press Photo Bob Wallfillich and Grocery participants view computer checkout

This is an original press photo. A computerized system of checking goods out of groceries will come into widespread use across the country in the next few years and will help hold prices down, a prime mover in the project said here Thursday. The entire grocery industry agreed about two years ago that such a system would be beneficial, and an ad hoc committee of Industry executives retained his firm to help work it out, added Lawrence C. Russell, senior associate with McKinsey & Company. Main participants in the spring conference of the Grocery Manufacturers of America's Administrative Systems Committee being held at the Marriott Hotel through Friday include (from left): Bob Wallfillich, a local member; Lawrence C. Russell of New York City; R.A. Stringer of White Plains, New York; and Robert L. Cottrell of Cincinnati, Ohio, all speakers. The four displayed a new symbol to be adopted by the manufacturers, which will be used to computerize checkout lines in grocery stores across the country in the near future. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 04-06-1973.
