Artist Biography:
Albert Louden (1943-) Painter and draughtsman,
notably in pastel, born in Blackpool into a working-class family during
evacuation from London’s East End, to which he returned in 1945. Although he
toyed over the years with higher mathematics and left-wing politics, from about
1962 Louden decided to concentrate on art while working as a lorry driver. To
give more time to painting, from 1979–84 Louden worked part-time, from 1985
painting full-time. Louden was discovered in 1979 by Victor Musgrave,
co-organiser of the Outsiders show at Hayward Gallery. In 1985 he had a
sell-out exhibition at Serpentine Gallery, in 1986 having a solo show in New
York at Rosa Esman Gallery. Later shows included Boundary Gallery, 1990, and
Whitford Fine Art, 2001. Louden’s pictures comprised heavily distorted figures
in urban settings and situations observed with wit and using a unique palette.
The Tate Gallery, Arts Council and Collection L’Art Brut, Lausanne, hold his work.

Definition of Art Brut by Jean Dubuffet
"By this [Art Brut] we mean pieces of work executed by people untouched by artistic culture, in which therefore mimicry, contrary to what happens in intellectuals, plays little or no part, so that their authors draw everything (subjects, choice of materials employed, means of transposition, rhythms, ways of writing, etc.) from their own depths and not from clichés of classical art or art that is fashionable. Here we are witnessing an artistic operation that is completely pure, raw, reinvented in all its phases by its author, based solely on his own impulses. Art, therefore, in which is manifested the sole function of invention, and not those, constantly seen in cultural art, of the chameleon and the monkey." Excerpted from Jean Dubuffet L’art brut préféré aux arts culturels, Galerie René Drouin, Paris, 1949.
