Japanese Bronze Prince Shotoku Study Statue 10.2inch Authenticated By Tadashi MA943

Description

This is a finely cast bronze statue (dōzō) titled “聖徳太子御考養之像 (Prince Shōtoku in Youth)”, based on the original prototype by Takamura Koun (高村光雲, 1852–1934) — one of Japan’s most celebrated sculptors — and authenticated (識箱) by Takamura Tadashi (高村規), a relative of the artist. The statue comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), confirming provenance and recognition by the Takamura family.

The work depicts Prince Shōtoku (Shōtoku Taishi, 574–622) as a young scholar, standing with calm composure and gentle dignity. Revered as a cultural hero and statesman, Prince Shōtoku is credited with introducing Buddhism to Japan and laying the foundations of its early government and moral philosophy. His youthful portrayal here captures both wisdom and serenity, embodying harmony between spiritual enlightenment and human grace.

The surface of the bronze exhibits a rich patina and meticulous detail — from the flowing lines of the robes to the tranquil expression on the prince’s face. The balance of form and proportion reflects Takamura Koun’s mastery of realism combined with spiritual depth. The sculptural finish is elegant yet powerful, conveying reverence and timeless beauty.

A remarkable piece of modern Japanese bronze art, this statue not only honors one of Japan’s greatest historical figures but also represents the artistic legacy of the Takamura family, pioneers of Meiji to Showa-era sculpture. The 識箱 (authenticated box) adds significant collectible and historical value.

Artist:

Takamura Koun (高村光雲, 1852–1934) was a master sculptor born in Tokyo. Originally trained as a Buddhist woodcarver, he became one of Japan’s foremost modern sculptors during the Meiji period, known for bridging traditional carving and Western realism. His works include the famous statue of Saigō Takamori in Ueno Park.

Takamura Tadashi (高村規), a relative and successor, authenticated this piece — his 識箱 indicates familial recognition and approval of the casting based on Koun’s original model.
