This book presents an excellent, comprehensive unit history of the of the First Regiment, South Carolina Infantry Regulars (Butler’s). It also contains a roster of the troops in the unit, with detailed Civil War service information on each soldier, including a transcription of his service record. The roster is alphabetical for easy use and constitutes a significant contribution to genealogical study.
The 1st Regiment (Butler’s South Carolina Infantry Regulars was also known as the Butler’s 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, or 1st South Carolina Infantry Regulars. This regiment was organized in December 1860 with eight companies and was later increased to ten first serving in the Army of the State of South Carolina, and later it was accepted into the service of the Confederate States in May of 1861. The original eight companies were A to H with companies I and K being added in early 1862. Although called an infantry regiment it acted as artillery. In May 1863, the 1st Regiment was designated the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Artillery or 3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment, but this designation was not confirmed although the regiment continued to serve as artillery. The unit trained as infantry and artillery, and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It took an active part in many conflicts in and around Charleston. In September 1862, the unit conducted operations on Morris Island, July 10 to September 6, 1863. In January 1865, it was assigned to Colonel A. Rhett’s Brigade and, serving as infantry, was active in the North Carolina Campaign. This regiment surrendered with Johnston’s forces at Durham Station on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel Richard H. Anderson, William Butler, and John Dunovant.
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived through not always. Most of the men from this regiment were recruited in Charleston, Columbia, and Cheraw, and the counties of Greenville, Lancaster, Chesterfield, and Anderson. In 1862 there was a reorganization of many military units which affected these companies.
The book presents a detailed history of the unit. It also presents information about the companies, their nicknames, and counties of origin. The book contains a comprehensive unit roster with details on the Civil War service of each soldier in the unit.
