A wonderfully charming and rare example of novelty silver — this delightful teddy bear pin cushion is full of character and detail and is a treasured find for collectors of sewing antiques or silver miniatures. Cast in solid sterling silver by Boots Pure Drug Company, this fantastic bear is fully hallmarked for Chester 1918 with the “BPDC” maker’s mark (Boots Pure Drug Co) — a particularly scarce Chester‐assayed mark and rarely seen on pin cushions.

The detailing is beautiful: you can clearly see the fur texture, facial features, paws, and the nicely shaped form of the bear. The original or early dark red velvet cushion is intact (though aged) and fits snugly into the bear’s back — it may or may not be original, but it complements the piece well.

Silver condition is excellent: no dents or major damage, only gentle, age-appropriate surface wear and a soft patina here and there. The contrast between the bright silver and aged cushion gives it a lovely vintage presence.

Condition:
The silver is bright and in superb state with just light surface marks. No dents, no deformations. The velvet cushion is in very good condition - may be a later replacement but still shows age and wear (fading, some slight thinning) but remains usable and intact.

Dimensions & Weight:
• Height: 3.5 cm
• Width: 3.0 cm
• Depth: 2.75 cm
• Weight: 14.67 g

Finding a Chester-assayed pin cushion of this model in such good condition is exceptional. Bears are among the more unusual forms, and BPDC examples are scarce and highly collected. This piece would make a wonderful centerpiece in any novelty silver or sewing collectibles display — or a truly special gift for someone who loves the whimsical side of antique silver.

It comes from a recently acquired single-owner collection of antique silver pin cushions — all beautifully preserved examples that showcase the very best of early 20th-century craftsmanship (see final pic). Please check out my shop for the rest of the collection.
