This is a gorgeous early 19th century antique Mason’s Ironstone oval shaped dish with moulded double handles and a raised oval centre most likely intended to be used as a base for a gravy or sauce boat. This piece dates between 1815 - 1820.
This dish is absolutely covered with the water lily lotus blossom design in bright imari coloured oranges, pinks, navy blue and gilt gold and consists of lilies and foliage on a white background.
This dish measures 21.5 x 17 cm and has a height of 2.5 cm.
The reverse of the dish is fully stamped in blue “Ironstone Warranted” and “No 5” which encircle a crown. I think the number refers to the shape of the piece.
This dish is in lovely condition while still retaining all the quirks and beauty of an antique piece which has been transfer printed and then hand coloured. It dates from a period when the Staffordshire potteries were trying to imitate Chinese designs.
This piece has no obvious cracks or chips but does not ring true to the touch. All of the edges of this dish are smooth with no nibbles and the decoration is fully coloured with no obvious fading or peeling. There is a tiny loss of colour to the central lily which appears to have been transfer printed to a slight angle, all part of its history!
This lovely dish would make a super base for a vase or to use to display small treats such as sweets or chocolates. It would also make a super addition to a collection of antique Mason’s Ironstone ceramics.
