In 1927 the State Railways (FS) purchased a total of 40 engines from the “Società Ernesto Breda” locomotive factory with connecting rod traction. The 94-ton, 13,910 mm long machines with the axis formula 1'D1' ran on three-phase current and had a continuous output of 2,200 kW. On the Brenner line, in the 1950s, the E.432 was often seen pulling international express trains. The Italian State Railways used the E.432 class until 1976.
