West Country Art Nouveau Cobalt Copper Lustre Pottery Fish Vase
This is an a striking and unusual Art Nouveau period lustre-glazed pottery vase, modelled in the form of a coiled fish with open mouth and finished in a rich iridescent blue-green glaze with subtle violet and bronze highlights, circa 1900-1920.
The vase is finely hand-modelled with flowing, organic movement typical of the turn-of-the-century aesthetic. The oil-slick lustre surface shimmers under the light, recalling the experimental reduction-fired glazes associated with early 20th-century West Country potteries, notably C.H. Brannam of Barnstaple and other regional art potteries influenced by Bernard Moore’s flambé glazes.
The underside bears hand-painted numerals ‘531’ and ‘31/6’, likely original model or decorator’s marks. No impressed factory stamp visible.
A highly decorative and sculptural piece of British Art Pottery, showing strong influence from the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements.
