Japanese Handscroll Hand Painted 'Flowers Birds & Figures' By Hirafuku Meiji Era MA852
This is a Japanese painting handscroll (makimono) containing a series of sketches of flowers, birds, figures, and various subjects, hand painted on paper by Hirafuku Sui’an. Executed with light brushwork and fluid lines, the drawings reveal the artist’s training process and keen eye for form and expression. Rather than a single finished composition, the scroll presents multiple studies, offering a glimpse into the creative practice of a Meiji-period painter. Such sketches were essential in refining observation and technique, serving as both reference material and artistic exploration. The inclusion of natural motifs alongside human figures reflects the breadth of subjects central to Nihonga during this era. Compact in scale yet extending nearly two meters in length, the scroll allows viewers to follow the flow of images as if turning the pages of a visual diary. A rare and intimate example of an artist’s working studies, valuable for both collectors and those interested in the development of Meiji Japanese painting.
