OTHER INFO OF CONCERN FOR THIS LISTING - SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS AND DESCRIPTIVE WORDS: J. C. HAARTZ COMPANY - MAKERS OF DURO-GLOSS GRAY DAY COATS FOR MEN NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT
Although Haartz now has a manufacturing presence in Germany as well as China, the company got its start in New England in 1906 when John Carl Haartz founded the company in Boston. The son of a German immigrant who owned a cloth inspection business, J. C. Haartz, as he was known, knew his way around the textile business by the time he opened the doors in his mid-20s, specializing in mohair products for tops and seats. As technology advanced and as customers began to expect more weather protection, multi-layered and rubber-coated fabric tops came on the market. Haartz met this challenge by raising $1.5 million in capital in 1919 by issuing stock and using some of the proceeds to open a coating plant in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1920. A hostile takeover left J. C. Haartz out of his own company, but he started anew, forming the Auto Fabric and Specialty Company in Cambridge in 1922. Soon after, he changed the name to Haartz Corporation. The new company attracted the business of top-notch OEMs and coachbuilders, with its products appearing on the likes of Packard, Auburn, Duesenberg and Cadillac. Even Rolls-Royce models built in Springfield, Massachusetts, included Haartz tops. When Detroit thrived, so did Haartz. Although the Great Depression almost did them in, as it did many of their customers, Haartz survived and introduced synthetic materials to their offerings in 1939.
