Chinese Republic overpainted scroll print ink and colour over base outline on paper after the original “The Qianlong Emperor Viewing Paintings, 1746—c.1750”, by Giuseppe Castiglione (Chinese name Lang Shining, 1688—1766) and Ding Guanpeng (fl.c. 1738—1768). The 'original' hangs in The Palace Museum, Beijing, PRC. Overall size 171.5 cm x 48.2 cm or 67 ½” x 19”. Image 87.5 cm x 39.5 cm or 34 ½” x 15 ½”.
This is obviously not being sold as the original 1746 work.
Condition: Border silk on a backing paper heavily creased in places. The backing is in 4 horizontal sections stuck together. There is some evidence of water transfer to the image borders occurring during the printing process although, other than surface dirt, the image body remains good. I have burn tested a single strand from the edge of the image work and it is quickly friable, thus indicating silk rather than cotton. It is somewhat of an open weave as can be seen from the photographs.

We have sought an opinion on this piece, but have been unable to receive unanimous agreement. This comes as no surprise since this is a somewhat unusual, although not unique, piece.
