This 1898 wedding guest book is signed by a Who's Who list of important turn-of-the-century government and business people in the Territory of Hawaii. They include Sanford B. Dole, the first and only President of the Republic of Hawaii; Sanford's wife Anna Cate Dole; Frederick Jewett Lowrey, president of the Oahu Sugar Company and Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce; James A. Kennedy of Inter-Island Steam Navigation, which was renamed Hawaiian Airlines in the 1920s, and Hawaiian newspaper publisher Theodore Richards. A rare and fascinating look at the upper crust of pre-statehood Hawaii!
Book signed "F.J. Lowrey" twice as a witness and a guest, "William M. Kincaid" as pastor of Central Union Church in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, "H. F. Wichman", "Anna C. Dole", "Sanford B. Dole", "Philip L. Weaver", "Jas A. Kennedy", "Theodore Richards" in black and blue inks. Numerous unknown signatures. Black ink notations and wedding gift notes in unknown hand. 34 pages including flyleaves, 6¾x8¼, mostly single-sided pages, gilt-colored edges. Dec. 20, 1898. Wedding guest book titled Our Wedding Bells for William Levi Moore, M. D. and Nellie Moore Lowrey in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. We're not sure how or if Frederick Jewett Lowrey is related to Nellie Moore Lowrey. SANFORD B. DOLE (1844-1926) was the head of the revolutionary provisional government after Queen Liliuokalani was deposed in 1893. Dole was the only President of the Republic of Hawaii (1894-1900) and the first Governor of the U.S. Territory of Hawaii (1900-1903). From 1904 to 1915, he served as Judge of the U. S. District Court for Hawaii. ANNA CATE DOLE (1841-1918), born Anna Prentice Cate, married Sanford Dole, the first and only President of the Republic of Hawaii, in 1873. They were married until his death. Scottish-born JAMES A. KENNEDY came to Hawaii in 1880 and was associated with the Honolulu Iron Works before becoming president and general manager of Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co, a shipping company that primarily did business between the Hawaiian Islands. His son, Stanley Kennedy, Sr., transformed the company into Hawaiian Airlines, with its first flight in 1929. A Son of the American Revolution, FREDERICK JEWETT LOWREY was a merchant with fingers in a lot of pies in Hawaii. He was president of Lewers & Cooke, Ltd., originally a hardware and lumber company, as well as president of the Oahu Sugar Company, the Waiahole Water Company, the Hawaiian Board of Missions and the Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce and vice-president of the Honolulu Gas Company. Lowrey also served numerous positions within the Hawaiian government. Journalist and educator THEODORE RICHARDS published the Hawaiian newspapers The Friend, the Hawaiian-language Ka Hoaloha, the Chinese Yau Bo and the Filipino Ang Abyan. He was also treasurer of the Hawaiian Board of Missions. Lawyer PHILIP L. WEAVER (1868-1927) practiced in the California Superior Court before moving to Honolulu in 1897. He was assistant to the Attorney General of the Territory of Hawaii and, from 1912 to 1913, was first deputy county attorney of the City and County of Honolulu. Weaver also wrote the Land Registration Act. HENRY F. WICHMAN (1866-1921) was a jeweler who formed Gomes & Wichman with J. E. Gomes in Honolulu in 1887. He bought out Gomes in 1888 and, in 1903, incorporated his company as H. F. Wichman & Company, Ltd. This company still does business in Hawaii. WILLIAM M. KINCAID lived in Hawaii for eight years. During that time, he was pastor of the Union Church of Honolulu. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Signatures touch. Some signatures have bled lightly but are legible. Ink transference. Pages and front flyleaf are separating from spine. Binding is coming undone. Top and bottom edges of spine are missing, revealing binding. Covers are lightly stained, scuffed and scratched, with rounded and worn corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
