Vintage 1974 Gibson L-5s in stunning original cherry sunburst finish!

The Gibson L-5S was introduced in 1973, as the solid body version of the world's most celebrated archtop guitar. Pat Martino famously used this model during the Joyous Lake era - and it became the blueprint for every small-bodied jazz guitar thereafter. The L-5s also gained some serious rock cred when both KEEF and Ronnie Wood began favoring the model.

This example, from 1974, is the first model year to introduce humbucking pickups as the "low-impedance" pickups on the 1973 model did not prove to be a huge hit. It also has the more desirable archtop-style L-5 tailpiece instead of the fine-tuning TP-6 stoptail you find on some models from this era.

100% factory original with no modifications, this is one of the nicest examples on the market today.

The tones from the original Bill Lawrence designed "tarback" super humbucking pickups is warm and punchy. Capable of clearly articulating the most deftly executed bebop lines while still remaining crystal clear for chord melody playing. The incredible feedback resistance of these pickups combined with the solidbody construction make this the undisputed champion for louder-volume jazz / organ / fusion gigs where a fully hollowbody guitar will do nothing but howl at the moon all night. A two-owner guitar since new, this L-5 shows minor signs of playwear and minor wear to the original gold hardware. The are no cracks, breaks or repairs. The top and back show lots of "active" flamed maple that changes and "pops" as you view it from different angles. The "cherry" sunburst is incredibly attractive and reminiscent of a 1960 Les Paul. We are proud to offer this rare and important piece of Gibson history. A model that will surely never see a future re-issue. Early all-original examples will only be harder, and harder, to find in the wild.

This L-5 has been strung with 10 gauge D'addario "Chrome" flatwounds. It ships in it's original purple plush lined Gibson embossed hard case (replaced handle).
