I’m selling an original 1786 first edition of An Introduction to Astronomy by John Bonnycastle. Although it’s not in perfect condition, all the main content is still there.
There are 20 engraved plates in total, including one of the moon and several fold-outs. The “Directions to the Binder” at the back shows where each plate should go, but a few are bound out of order. It’s missing the blank pages before the frontispiece and after the binder’s directions.
Condition-wise, the boards are very worn and the front cover has come away, but everything is still complete and the text is readable throughout. The title page has had a section removed (possibly where a name once was), though the printed text remains intact. There’s age spotting and staining throughout, which is typical for a book of this period.
This is a scarce and very appealing early astronomy book full of historical interest — ideal for anyone who collects early science or enjoys books with character.
