About the Book- W.G. Archer, who lived two and half years among the Santals and learnt Santali language, organized the collection of Santal poetry, legends, stories and addresses, attended Santal ceremonies, dances and festivals. Therefore the primary objective of the book as to acquaint the readers with the descriptive account of the Santals and their poetry is fully achieved. The book very beautifully illustrates their love of dancing and singing, their splendid physiques, their belief in bongas or nature spirits which reminds the scholars of ancient India and their klove poetry – Simple, Sensuous and passionate shared with Kalidasam Amaru and Jayadeva. It also intrinsically discusses their traditions and customs. To do full justice with the subject, the work consists of twenty major chapters which are fabulously enriched with comprehensive information on Santals who existed in the Santal Pargana District of Bihar. The book is a painstaking, knowledgeable study of anthropological aspects, social aspects of the Santals in all respects. All students, research scholars, anthropologist, historians will find the book very valuable as a reference source and general study.
About the Author- About The Author: W.G. Archer carried his passion for poetry and interest in art into his administrative career spread over sixteen years in the Indian Civil Service in Bihar. His interest in folk art in the remote jungles of West Bihar was reflected in the publication of The Vertical Man: A Study of Primitive Indian Sculpture (1947). He also published another volumes on Oraon Poetry, The Dove and the Leopard (1948). In December 1942 he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Santal Parganas. Before he finally left India on premature retirement, he worked as Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung in Nagaland from November 1946 to February 1948. After 1949, Archer emerged as an eminent specialist on the Indian painting, culture and poetry, becoming Keeper of the Indian Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
