    What do the Harmonic Balancer Pulley do?

    Harmonic balancers are misnamed. They do not balance an engine, rather they absorb and remove unwanted vibration due to torsional twisting of the crankshaft. They are in effect vibration dampeners and are frequently called dampeners. Dampeners are like torsional shock absorbers used to dampen torsional twist and vibration in an engine. Torsional vibration is a twisting vibration caused by the firing pulses of each combustion event. The force of the combustion process causes the crank to deflect ever so slightly in the direction of the force, and when that force goes away the crank ever-so-slightly springs back. At certain frequencies the crank can resonate, making the vibration much worse. With eight cylinders firing, these forces are moving back and forth and right through each other constantly. This is where a harmonic dampener works its magic.


    Installion

    • Step 1.Open and support your hood.
    • Step 2.Locate your harmonic balancer.
    • Step 3.Using a flashlight and mirror, inspect the harmonic balancer for signs of wear.
    • Step 4.Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley. In most cases the crankshaft pulley is part of the harmonic balancer.
    • Step 5.Using a suitable socket and ratchet, remove the harmonic balancer mounting bolt.
    • Step 6.Use a pulley puller to remove the harmonic balancer from the crankshaft.
    • Step 7.Match the replacement part to the old harmonic balancer before installation. Make sure that bolt hole locations are the same, size is the same and if applicable, timing marks are the same.
    • Step 8.Reinstall harmonic balancer in reverse order while following manufacturer torque specifications.
    • Step 9.Start the engine and road test the vehicle to verify the repair.

    What do the Harmonic Balancer Pulley do?

    Harmonic balancers are misnamed. They do not balance an engine, rather they absorb and remove unwanted vibration due to torsional twisting of the crankshaft.     Installion

    • Step 1.Open and support your hood.
    • Step 2.Locate your harmonic balancer.
