This is an original press photo. The name of the hero in the Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" was Edmond Dantes, but it might have been Hugues de la Vergne. Alexandre Dumas based at least part of his work on the adventures of the latter, a young Orleanian who sailed for Paris in 1811, according to later stories in the New Orleans Times-Democrat and a tradition among the de la Vergnes, as old Esplanade Family. Creoles were musical; courtesy of Historic New Orleans Collectors of The Arts and the Scholars. A young lady of the time tries her hand at the violin.Photo measures 8 x 10.25inches.
