The author has signed the book as well as sketched an image of Dashiell Hammett. 

Nolan is best known as the co-author of Logan's Run and one of the handful of regular writers for the original Twilight Zone, but he was also a professional illustrator before shifting to writing. He was an expert on pulp-era mystery, western and science fiction authors as well as auto racing.

This was the first book-length study of Hammett's work.
