The doomed love affair between Tristan, second in line to Britain's throne, and Isolde, princess of the feuding Irish, has been celebrated in the creative arts at least since circa 1235, when the first known written version of their story appeared in France. The cinema got into the act not long after its own arrival on the scene, with French director Maurice Mariaud setting the ball rolling with a black-and-white silent version of the legend starring Sylvio De Pedrelli and Andrée Lionel in 1920. More recently there have been memorable screen follow-ups, with Jon Vickers and Birgit Nilsson in the title rôles in 1974 and Christopher Waltz and Antonia Preser in 1981. Particularly in Germany, cinematic takes of Wagner's operatic version of the legend have taken precedence over purely dramatic presentations of a story created centuries ago. This 2006 film version of the legend is by director Kevin Reynolds and was scripted by Dean Georgaris. It stars James Franco and Sophia Myles in the title rôles, with a supporting cast that includes Rufus Sewell, David Patrick O'Hara, Mark Strong, Henry Cavill, Bronagh Gallagher, Ronan Vibert, Lucy Russell, JB Blanc, Graham Mullins, Leo Gregory, Dexter Fletcher and Richard Dillane. Filmed in Ireland with background music by the Afro Celt Sound System, the two-hour film, a Scott Free co-production, was backed by Ireland, the UK, the USA, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. In English, with optional subtitles for the hearing impaired, the film contains moderate violence and sex and is rated 12. It has a two-hour run time on this DVD, whose bonus extras include a choice of audio commentaries, an image gallery, a "Making of..."  documentary and a "behind-the-scenes'" featurette.
