May 1940 - the skies over France darkened with German aircraft as the Wehrmacht launched their devastating Blitzkrieg. The French Army, once considered the finest in Europe, stood ready to defend their homeland. From the concrete fortifications of the Maginot Line to the open fields of northern France, soldiers from metropolitan France and her colonial territories prepared to face the German onslaught.

In the face of revolutionary German tactics, the French Army fought with determination and courage. Colonial troops from North Africa fought alongside metropolitan French units, while the mighty Char B1 bis tanks proved themselves more than a match for their German counterparts. The streets of French towns and villages became battlegrounds as the army struggled to adapt to the pace of modern warfare.

Though France would ultimately fall in 1940, the bravery of her soldiers would not be forgotten. From the strategic withdrawal at Dunkirk to the last defensive actions in the south, the French Army showed that the spirit of Verdun still lived in her soldiers.
