SYNOPSIS ....

From Inside the Dustjacket

Peter Quentin is a London solicitor, an art expert and an amateur detective. his brother-in-law, a Scotland Yard superintendent, calls him in to help with a gruesome murder next door, where a headless torso has been found in the bathtub. The only clue: a fragment of an ancient statuette found in the pocket of a jacket wrapped around the corpse.

With this slender clue and his knowledge of art and archaeology, Quentin plunges into the strange world of dealers, restorers, collectors, scholars, and diggers. The murderer keeps one step ahead - and a series of severed heads and headless bodies practically litters his path.

Central to Quentin's investigation is a recent expedition to an ancient site. A Quentin discovers, this expedition has produced hidden scandals, undercover rivalries, passionate jealousies, the revival of an ancient bloodthirsty religion, and several other motives for murder. the dark secrets of the recent past rival anything in the ancient history they relate to, and Quentin's trail leads to a scene of ultimate horror.

The pace is swift, the characters entertaining, the writing stylish, the mystery deep. and the bodies piled high.
