This carved coconut is believed to be from the mid-1800s and may have been carved by Capt. Charles Hinckley, known as the "world's smallest lighthouse keeper. "
The picture of Hinckley among the listing photos does NOT come with the item.
Containing images of an eagle, birds, rabbits, and flowers, this carved coconut is a perfect of example of 19th century handcrafts when people had time on their hands.
The coconut is signed "Charles Hinckley." Capt. Hinckley, a native of Barnstable MA who stood under 5 feet tall, was the lighthouse keeper for the Bishop and Clerks Lighthouse near Yarmouth, Mass.
He also spent time keeping another Cape Cod lighthouse, Dumpling Rock Light, near Darthmouth and New Bedford on Buzzard's Bay in Massachussetts.
Before his lightkeeping career, Charles Hickley also served as a merchant seaman on East India bound ships in the mid-1800s. On one of his voyages he may have acquired the coconut, which is certainly not native to Massachussetts.
