BOOK NOTES:

This book is the authors account of his journey to and from Lhasa in 1936-7 when he was the private secretary to the leader of the Gould mission that was to meet Tibetan officials to discuss mutual problems following the death of the Dalai Lama in 1933 and the possible return of the exiled Tashi Lama from China.

There is a very detailed account of the trip that was made by donkey and horse transport passing through Phari,Gyantse on the way to Lhasa.

Excellent descriptions of meetings with officials, monasteries, festivals, food, general life and the Patola Palace.

This must be about the first travel guide to Tibet.

A very acute and perceptive observation on Tibetan life.
