Sinclair's sweeping novel of the 1920s California Oil Boom and The First Red Scare addresses the dangers of unfettered capitalism and the corruption and repression that inevitably follows in its wake. The work makes thinly veiled references to a multitude of real people and events including the Teapot Dome scandal of the Harding administration and the radio evangelism of Aimee Semple McPherson. 

The work would inspire the loose 2007 film adaptation "There Will Be Blood" written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson which would earn Daniel Day Lewis an Academy Award for his unforgettable performance in the leading role.

Sinclair retained publishing rights for his work and often issued these self-published "author" editions in conjunction with the first trade publication. Later printing date (~1935) inferred by Pasadena, Station A vs. Long Beach place of publication (Ahouse), and other titles on rear cover.

Good Condition - Chips to tail of covers and following/preceding pages, small 1/4 inch tear extending through ads at rear of book at fore-edge. Exterior joints appear cracked but remain firmly attached, past repair a possibility, minor creasing/toning
