SYNOPSIS ....

* German Language edition!  Translated from English by Alexander Melach

* Colour illustrations by notable Australian artist ROBERT INGPEN

The beautiful story of a boy living on the South Australian Coorong and the pelican, Mr. Percival, which is raised a chick abandoned when its mother is killed by sportsmen......

Storm Boy likes to wander alone along the fierce deserted coast of South Australia's Coorong. He and his father live a reclusive life among the dunes that face out into the Southern Ocean. After a pelican mother is shot, Storm Boy rescues three chicks; he names them Mr Proud, Mr Ponder and Mr Percival, and nurses them back to health. His father, known to some as 'Hideaway Tom,' forces Storm Boy to release the birds, but Mr Percival returns. The boy and the pelican form a special bond. Mr Percival is shot by hunters and dies. The story also looks at the conflict between Storm Boy's lifestyle and the externally imposed requirement for him to attend school. Storm Boy was made into a major feature film and won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film in 1977.

About the Author

Australian author Colin Thiele made many significant contributions to children's literature during his life. In fact, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia in 1977 for his work as a writer and educator. Thiele wrote plenty of books, over 100 in fact, including Storm Boy, a children's novel about a boy who saves three pelican chicks. Thiele truly was one of Australia's best and most well respected authors. In this lesson, we will learn about his life and some of his best books.

Early Life

Colin Thiele was born on November 16, 1920 in South Australia. His family was German, and he didn't learn English until he entered primary school. He was just a regular kid who went to school, but he showed a tremendous amount of creativity. In 1941, Thiele graduated from the University of Adelaide and went on to be an educator. He fell in love with teaching children, and he began putting his creative ideas to use by writing children's fiction and books on education.

After serving in the Australian military, Thiele taught in Port Lincoln in South Australia. He began his writing career as a textbook author there. He wrote books on the geography of Australia and the South Pacific largely because he could not find adequate textbooks for his classes.

From there, he began writing children's books for a variety of age groups. He wrote Sun on the Stubble, published in 1961. The book is about a German immigrant family living in South Australia and reads a lot like Thiele's childhood . Not only did Thiele write novels, he wrote plays, poetry, and short stories for children. Thiele often wrote stories about young boys who must overcome a great obstacle to see what type of person they truly are on the inside.

Very  Entertaining read!

Reviews

Touching … A beautiful story that I wanted to read before the movie comes out. The story is built on caring, loving, determination, and bravery. THIS edition has the most divine artworks by Robert Ingpen!

Outstanding first chapter book for kids…… This classic Australian Colin Thiele children's novel is as wonderful as I remembered from years ago. I believe it is a truly heartwarming, but honest story, perfect for young readers wanting to progress into more meaningful chapter books. It provides plenty of discussion/thinking points with the different ways in which the animals (birds) are viewed and treated by the different people. It also lets children know what real life is like - death happens to those we love, and growing up is part of coming to understand that.

Iconic Australian book for kids……. 'Storm Boy' belongs in the canon of Australian Children's Literature of the twentieth century. It is a dramatic and emotionally integrated story which also captures the sense of place and time. This is the German Language edition with Robert Ingpens's magnificent artwork throughout

Connectedness is so important… A beautiful book for readers of all ages. The books main theme is the connection humans have with other living things and how the unorthodox nature of these connections never weakens the bond. This is a beautifully illustrated collectible edition.

Love this gentle story  … Just a great story about a boy and his pelicans and how the came to be and the relationship they made with each other.  The GERMAN language edition is illustrated by none other than Australia's Robert Ingpen!

Superb  …. My eleven year old boy loved this book! He's a weak reader, but managed this simple text. The plot is simple and heartfelt! It's real, and hits he humane spot in all of us. It's short and powerfully simple. The whole family loved it!

Marvellous Reading!
