BRIGADIER GENERAL RUSH C. HAWKINS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/30/1911 - HFSID 22244
RUSH HAWKINS
Handwritten letter from the Civil War general to an autograph seeker: "I always sympathize with any kind of a collecting friend, having been part of that noble fraternity for about 70 years."
Autograph Letter signed: "Rush C. Hawkins", 1 page, 4½x7. 42 Fifth Avenue, New York, 1911 July 30. To Howes Norris, Sr., in full: "I always sympathize with any kind of a collecting friend, having myself been part of that noble fraternity for about 70 years. And now, for that reason as well as several others, I take pleasure in sending you something which costs me nothing, is worth nothing and may give you a moment of satisfaction. Yours faithfully". Lawyer Rush C. Hawkins (1831-1920) enlisted for service in the Mexican War, and raised his own regiment, the 9th New York Infantry (known as the Hawkins Zouaves) to fight for the Union in 1861. As a colonel, he participated in operations on the North Carolina coast, quarreling with General Benjamin Butler but briefing President Lincoln and General McClellan personally on military options for that theater. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mills and participated in at the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg (all 1862). He did no campaigning after 1863, but was brevetted to brigadier general in 1865. As he notes in this letter, Hawkins was himself an avid collector of art and - especially - of old books. He attempted to acquire the first and second books of every publisher before 1500, and succeeded in securing 130 of the known 238 volumes in this category. This collection is now housed at Brown University. Hawkins quarreled with artists as well as generals. Painter James McNeill Whistler devotes considerable space to Hawkins in his book, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (1890). Toned. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
