The manga, which won the 42nd (1996) Shogakukan Manga Award in the children's category, is based on the theme of horse racing and features animals. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) from issue 50 in 1994 to issue 18 in 1997 for the first part (up to the Arima Kinen), and from issue 24 in the same year to issue 9 in 1998 for the second part (overseas expedition arc). As the series was prematurely ended near its conclusion, a conclusion chapter was published in Akamaru Jump 1998 Spring. The chapters are counted as "Weekly ○ Race." As of February 2009, the total number of copies sold, including the bunko edition, has reached 9 million copies. The series is known for its crude humor, but it also unfolds a serious drama, making it a popular and orthodox horse racing work.

In the early part of the story, the relationship between humans and animals (horses and mice) is not much different from the real world. However, as the story progresses, humans and animals, especially the protagonist horse Makibao's partner, jockey Yamamoto Kanetsugu (mentioned later), begin to have equal dialogue exchanges. Scenes of direct conversations between Makibao and other racehorses, as well as the mouse Chuubei and humans, can be seen throughout the series
