Offered is a brand new (May 2025) LidarLab (very high quality), u-blox based GNSS (multiple constelations vs. Garmin GPS only) unit for your Lidar. This GNSS unit is used to add Pulse Per Second (PPS) timing and location services directly into your .pcap stream (point cloud). This unit has been cusome configured (uploaded config file, written and tested by me) for the Velodyne VLP-32c.   

Note: The stock Garmin puck and non configured u-blox units won't work with the Velodyne lidar. Additionally, none of the models will accept I2C, TTL or UART based data. The unit must meet Velodyne's requirements of RS232 and rising PPS timing in order for it to work. FYI: Velodyne's requirements are posted in the latest version of their technical manual.

What's upgraded...

As a baseline, the GNSS unit's Firmware is updated to the most current version.  Following, an optimized configuration file is uploaded (optimized file has been written by me, btw). The unit is then tested live, on a spinning VLP-32c.

Following the unit's updates, the plug end of the cord is upgraded to prevent future failure of the DuPont plug (common). Marine grade shrink tubing is used, which has a glue inner lining that melts and cures, to help with strength.  Lastly, a microfiber bag is added to give the GPS unit an actual home (knowing that the box is cardboard and cumbersome). 

These GPS units work really well.  Here are a few more details on why: 

  • I update the NMEA version from 2.0/2.3 (Velodyne's config is based on 2.0) to u-blox's latest, 4.11. The important difference is the addition of DGNSS (stands for Differential Global Navigation Satellite System). It is an enhancement to standard GNSS (such as GPS, GLONASS, or Galileo) that improves the accuracy of positioning by using a reference station to correct errors in satellite signals.
     
  • PPS calculates quickly and locks on strong, providing the Lidar unit with GPS Pulse timing, which is uber accurate and doesn't drift. Lidars measure Time of Flight - accuracy of time equals data integrity.
     
  • And ultimately, the lidar unit is continuously receiving an optimal MNEA message, in a modern 4.11 format; happy data!
