Superman Building

Art
print of the Superman building in Providence RI from an original
watercolor painting by William B. MacGregor Jr, who is known in
the New England area as the Junkyard and Nostalgia Artist.
-------------------------------------------------------
The
“Superman” Building, originally was built for the Industrial
Trust Company, Built in 1928 and is the tallest skyscraper in
Providence. It’s called the Superman building because it looks
like the Daily
Planet in the Superman comic book and on the 1950’s TV series.
Another interesting fact the top of the Superman building has a
mooring mast that was meant to dock airships and Zeppelins —then
thought to be the vehicle of the future. From 1928 until 2013, a
bank had always been the major tenant in the building. Since 2013,
when the last bank tenant moved out, the icon has remained vacant.
In
2019 it was placed on the National Trust for Historic
Preservation’s list of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
For many years the superman building stood as a silent, sleeping
giant in downtown Providence. But happily, the building is
currently being renovated and soon again will be the pride of the
renaissance city.
