Tara Devi is often depicted in a form similar to that of Kali.However, there are differences in the depiction – Tara’s complexion is bluewhereas Kali’s can be black or blue. Tara holds a bowl made from a scull in onehand, a pair of scissors in another, a blue lotus in the third hand and an axein the fourth. She is draped in tiger skin and has a necklace of skulls. Thoughdepicted to be a very fierce deity, she is considered to be benevolent towardsher devotees and showers them with blessings.

What is yantra?

Meaning of word 'Yantra in Sanskrit is "yam" witha suffix "tra," where "tra" means instruments or tools and"yam" means "to gain control over the energy inherent in someelement or being". Yantras carry spiritual significance, and point theuser to higher levels of consciousness.

Yantra is an instrument designed to curb the psychic forcesby concentrating them on a specific pattern, and in such a way that thispattern becomes reproduced by the worshiper's visualizing power. According toSri Swami Satchidananda, a yantra is "a physical expression of a mantra -a mantra being a Divine aspect in the form of sound vibration - yantra in theform of a geometrical figure." So "when mantras or divine ideas aremeditated upon, certain images are brought out" and these images "areused in meditation or worship to symbolize or express certain divine ideas andquality (Satchidananda).

The Yantra provides a focal point that is a window into theabsolute. When the mind is concentrated on a single, simple object (in thiscase a Yantra), the mental chatter ceases. Eventually, the object is droppedwhen the mind can remain empty and silent without help. In the most advancedphases, it is possible to attain union with God by the geometric visualizationof a Yantra. The Yantra is like a microcosmic picture of the macrocosm. It is afocusing point and an outer and inner doorway. The Yantras are often focused ona specific deity and so by tuning into the different Yantras you can tap intocertain deities or creative force centers in the universe.
