Aluminum oxide is a hard, sharp abrasive grain that fractures under load — when a grain dulls, it breaks to expose a fresh cutting edge rather than glazing over. This self-sharpening behavior keeps cutting performance consistent through the sleeve's life and makes aluminum oxide particularly resistant to loading on hardwood, MDF, and soft plastics. It cuts faster than garnet on hardwood, lasts longer than silicon carbide in wood applications, and handles the heat generated by drum sanding better than less thermally stable abrasive types. The result is a sleeve that stays aggressive longer and produces consistent surface quality from the first pass to the last.
