Frederic Efrem Rich (January 31, 1898 – September 8, 1956) was a Polish-born American bandleader and composer He was a pianist and formed his band in the 1920s. Rich was active from the 1920s to the 1950s. Among the musicians in his band were Red Nichols, Bunny Berigan, Leo McConville , Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Al Duffy, Joe Venuti, and Eddie Lang.
He enjoyed a long stay at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Rich and his band served as their house band for a time in the 1920s. Rich began leading a studio band in 1925 and recorded for Banner, Gennett, Okeh, Harmony, Columbia, Paramount, Camden and Vocalion.
During the recording period between November 1929 and March 1931, there was a scattering of hot jazz versions of popular tunes, with notable solos by Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang. These celebrated recordings include “A Peach of a Pair" , "I Got Rhythm", “The Little Things In Life”, "Cheerful Little Earful" and "I'm Tickled Pink with a Blue-Eyed Baby".
His main recording sessions lasted until 1933.
In 1945, Rich was badly injured when he suffered a fall. As a result, he suffered from partial paralysis. But despite this, Rich continued to lead studio bands into the 1950s. Fred Rich died on September 8, 1956 in California at the age of 58 after a long illness.
This CD includes a selection of recordings made in 1930 to 1931. They feature some great jazz musicians of the period. There are several hot jazz solos throughout the sessions. All Selections have been digitally restored by Vintage Recordings.
