Whatever the form of the container, the fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. For example, no pockets clothes, medicine case and wallet. These miniature paper netsuke is Hannya Shingyo (Buddhism Heart Sutra) Hannya Shingyo is the most popular Buddhism Sutra. Almost Buddhists (Shingon, Tendai, Zen Buddhism) are chanting this. This Sutra is expressing essence of Mahayana Buddhism with around 300 letters. It is near philosophy, it is not spell.  The main theme is (Shiki-Soku-Ze-Kuu, Kuu-Soku-Ze-Shiki). The Heart Sutra says: | "You don't have 'yourself'. Actual existences are composed of a series of perceptions for example body, sense, imagination, association and thinking. All factors aren't yours, and also doesn't belong to you. But 'yourself' does not exist without these factors. That's why you aren't here eventually. In addition, these factors are also an illusion, unsubstantial one. By this wisdom, we can get out all sufferings and misfortunes." | There is printed on E-Shingyo (Picture Heart Sutra) on the back of this paper. Eshingyo is the Heart Sutra for people who are unlettered. Mainly it was issued in Edo era (17th - early 19th century). Since Meiji era (19th century), Japanese literacy was increased doramatically. So E-Shingyo is not needed in these days.
