Fashion illustrator René Gruau revolutionized haute couture with his dramatic illustrations for fashion houses like Dior, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Lanvin. Throughout his six-decade career, Gruau worked for almost every major fashion magazine, including Marie Claire, L’Officiel, Elle, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar, creating bold illustrations inspired by diverse influences including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Japanese prints. He was renowned for capturing the elegance and glamour of haute couture using bold, energetic brushstrokes and refined contours. In 1947, he was commissioned by Christian Dior to design the “Miss Dior” advertisement, a campaign that launched Dior’s famed “New Look” collection and made Gruau a household name in high fashion. Although best known for his work in fashion, Gruau also designed costumes, scenery , and advertisements for theater and ballet and created an iconic poster for Federico Fellini’s 1960 film La Dolce Vita. His work is now held in the permanent collections of the Louvre and other major institutions.
Rene Gruau (1909-2004) is one of the most recognized poster artists of the 21st Century. Gruau was a fashion illustrator whose exaggerated portrayal of fashion design through painting has had a lasting effect on the fashion industry. Gruau used simplicity of lines and crisp color, particularly, blacks, reds, and yellows to create his images. His lively and elegant style suits many tastes and decors.

This print has some unfortunate tide lines which can easily be matted out or possibly washed out by a conservator. That is why the price is reduced for this artist proof of the iconic image.
