Full Grit Progression. Four Matched Sizes. One Complete Starting Kit.
When you're setting up a new drum sanding station or working a project from rough-cut through finished surface, you need more than two grits. The POWERTEC 71710 covers the full four-stage abrasive progression — 60, 80, 120, and 240 grit — across four matched diameter-length sleeve sizes. Where the 71709 supplies multiple sleeves of two grits for production depth, the 71710 covers all four grit stages with one sleeve each — the right assortment for sampling the full progression, establishing a new setup, or keeping one of each grit available on each drum size without committing to production quantities.
Each sleeve size has matched diameter and length dimensions — the sleeve length equals the drum diameter for each size, which corresponds to shorter rubber sanding drum sets where drum length and diameter are equal. All 16 sleeves are aluminum oxide — the same self-sharpening, clog-resistant abrasive as the 71709, appropriate for wood, light metal, and plastic sanding applications across the full grit range.

The Full Grit Progression — From Stock Removal to Near-Finish
60
Aggressive Removal
Heavy stock removal, saw mark elimination, rough shaping and profile fitting. Use first on hard species or high-stock removal passes.
80
Material Removal
Follows 60 grit to refine shape and remove coarse scratches. Primary working grit for most hardwood curved sanding operations.
120
Smoothing
Removes 80 grit scratches and brings the surface to pre-finish quality. Final drum sanding stage before hand sanding or finishing.
240
Near-Finish
Fine surface prep — removes 120 grit marks on softwood or detail pieces. Can be used as a final sanding stage before applying stain or topcoat.
🥁 Matched Diameter-Length Sleeves — Shorter Drum Format
Each sleeve in this set has equal diameter and length dimensions — 1/2" × 1/2", 3/4" × 1", 1" × 1", and 1-1/2" × 1-1/2". These correspond to shorter rubber sanding drums where the drum length matches the drum diameter, commonly found in benchtop oscillating spindle sander kits and compact drill press drum sets. Verify your rubber drum dimensions (both diameter and length) before ordering — these sleeves will not fit standard 2-1/2"-long drums (see POWERTEC 71709 for the 2-1/2" length assortment). Matching sleeve length to drum length is essential for a secure grip and consistent sanding performance.

Key Product Benefits:
- Full Four-Grit Progression — 60 through 240: 60 for aggressive removal, 80 for primary shaping, 120 for smoothing, 240 for near-finish prep — the complete sanding progression from rough to ready-for-finish in one assortment.
- Four Matched Diameter-Length Sizes: 1/2" × 1/2", 3/4" × 1", 1" × 1", and 1-1/2" × 1-1/2" — matched sleeve dimensions for shorter rubber sanding drums where diameter and length are equal.
- Full Progression Coverage per Size: Every drum diameter covered at all four grits — one sleeve of each grit available for each drum size without stocking four separate packs.
- Aluminum Oxide Construction: Self-sharpening grain cuts fast on wood and light metal, resists loading, and maintains cutting performance through the life of the sleeve across all four grit levels.
- Correct Starting Inventory: The right assortment for establishing a new drum sanding setup — covers all grits and all four common drum sizes in one purchase.
- Wood, Light Metal, and Plastic: Aluminum oxide works across wood species, aluminum and non-ferrous metal, and plastic fabrication at all four grit stages.
PRO TIP: When working through the full four-grit progression on curved profiles, don't skip grits — each stage removes the scratches left by the previous stage. Jumping from 60 to 120 leaves 60-grit scratches that 120 can't fully remove efficiently, and they'll show under stain or finish. The time savings of skipping a grit is illusory — you spend it going back with finer grits trying to chase out scratches that 80 would have eliminated cleanly in one pass. Work 60→80→120 and use 240 only where the finish demands it.
Where This Assortment Gets Used
New spindle/drum sanding setup — one purchase stocks all drum sizes at all four grit stages without sourcing four separate packs
Multi-stage curved profile finishing — full progression from 60-grit rough shaping through 240-grit near-finish on chair parts, cabinet arches, and furniture profiles
Guitar and instrument work — fine-grit options (120, 240) for curved body surfaces and neck profiles requiring near-finish quality from the drum sander
Small detail sanding — 1/2" and 3/4" sizes for tight radius work on decorative profiles, toy edges, and narrow curved grooves
Template work — 120 and 240 for final template edge refinement before pattern routing a production run
Variety project work where different grits are needed on short notice — one of each grit available for each drum size without switching to a different sleeve pack
Light metal deburring and surface prep — aluminum oxide across all four grits handles non-ferrous metal edge finishing from coarse deburring through smooth prep
