FIELD BUS ADAPTERS

DATA SHEET

GENERAL

The Field Bus Adapters are microprocessor-controlled bus
interfaces belonging to the ComfortPoint TM Open family. They
integrate seamlessly into ComfortPoint TM Open Systems (see

Fig. 1
), providing additional bus capability (with communi-
cation and power) and so reducing the cost of installing
HVAC plants. Thus, instead of having to run separate wires
from every sensor and actuator to the plant controller through
multiple conduits, a single bus wire can run through a single
conduit.

Each Field Bus Adapter (FBA) is designed to facilitate com-
munication between the CPO-PC-6A Plant Controller and
four connected field devices such as sensors or actuators.
The additions of intelligence at this level in typical building
system architecture include, but are not limited to: advanced
diagnostics, and automatic commissioning and configuration.

There are four Field Bus Adapters to choose from, with a
variety of input and output options:

CPO-FBA-1A (Field Bus Adapter with 2 Universal Inputs
and 2 Analog Outputs);

CPO-FBA-2A (Field Bus Adapter with 2 Universal Inputs
and 2 Digital Outputs);

CPO-FBA-3A (Field Bus Adapter with 2 Universal Inputs,
1 Analog Output, and 1 Digital Output);

CPO-FBA-4A (Field Bus Adapter with 4 Universal Inputs).

FEATURES

Plug-and-play functionality.

Easier to install (multiple wire runs to the plant
controller from each individual sensor and actuator
can be led through a single conduit).

Terminal blocks for Field Bus and I/O connection with
screw terminals for fast wiring.

Easier fault isolation (the additional intelligence at the
sensor/actuator level enables various diagnostic
functions to be performed right at the field device).

Reduced number of devices to install because the bus
approach allows multiple sensors or actuators to be
integrated together at a single location.

Easier maintenance because, when a device is
swapped out, it will be immediately brought into the
system with the configuration of the previous device.

Easier system expansion – no additional wires need to
be pulled or new conduits installed to the controller.

Uses the ComfortPoint TM Open Field Bus com-
munication protocol.

Suitable for wall-mounting, DIN rail-mounting, and
junction-box mounting.

Two LEDs for visual trouble indication.

EIA-485 communications network. Capable of baud
rates of 38.4 Kbaud.

Field commissioned and configured via the
CPO-PC-6A Plant Controller using ComfortPoint TM
Open tools.

Suitable for a wide variety of HVAC applications.

The Field
Bus Adapter housing is UL-plenum rated
(UL916).

The Field Bus Adapters can be connected to the CPO-PC-6A
Plant Controller via three of the controller’s four RS485 inter-
faces (the corresponding DIP switches on the controller must
be set to “ON”). Using the ComfortPoint TM Open Field Bus
communication protocol, the Field Bus Adapters communi-
cate with the controller at a rate of 38.4 Kbaud.

Ambient Environmental Limits
Operating temperature: 0 ... +50 °C (+32 ... 122 °F) at
5...95% RH (non-condensing)

Storage temperature: -30 ... +70 °C (-22 ... +158 °F) at
5...95% RH

Dimensions (W X L X H) 102 X 102 X 42 mm

Weight 130 g (excl. WMH)

MTBF

MTBF (mean time before failure): 88,000 hours (10-year
lifetime).

Electrical Specifications

Rated Voltage

All terminals are protected against voltages of max. 24 Vac
+20% or 30 Vdc.

All outputs are protected against short-circuiting.

Input Power

The following voltages are supported: 24 Vac ± 20% or
24...30 Vdc.

The FBAs can be powered by the same transformer used to
power actuators (when this is done, it is essential that the
proper polarity be observed).

NOTE: Max. power draw on FBA, only: 7 VA (maximum).

Analog Output (AO) Circuits

The analog outputs are individually configurable for current or
voltage.

Analog Current Outputs

Current output range: 4.0 ... 20.0 mA direct-current

Output load resistance: 550 Ω maximum

Analog Voltage Outputs

Voltage output range: 0.0 ... 10.8 Vdc

Maximum output current: 10.0 mA
