SYNOPSIS ....

Autobiography of a South Australian woman who was reared partly by her father as he tramped the inland roads, and her grandparents who lived in the suburbs. A story containing both humour and tragedy and told with 'unflinching honesty'. Details the author's long involvement with and great love of horses. The text includes photographs.

As a tough country urchin, Catherine Johns still manages to wrest joy from a life pitched between parent and grandparent, suburb and bush, cart and shearing shed, house and sheep station. Always a spirited rebel, even in her peripatetic adult years, neither tragedy nor illness has ever defeated her passion for life and her love of horses.

Red Catherine Johns is a Romani Gypsy woman who lives on 168 acres in in the Mallee of South Australia with 100 others – but she is the only human. Animals are in Red’s bones, blood, soul and heart, the “glue that holds the magic together.” 

Red’s first book, a Resilient Spirit tells the story of her unusual life with joy, humor and disarming candor. Pitched between parent and grandparent, suburb and bush, house and sheep station, she was a gutsy little girl who learned to wrestle what joy she could from childhood and whose best friends were dogs and horses; a teenage misfit – teachers branded her “uncontrollable” – she was sent to jillaroo on a remote country station; a reluctant shop assistant she escaped each afternoon to work as a strapper on the local racetrack.

About the Author

Catherine Johns was born in 1949.  She's one of only two known Romanis in Australia who still travel as her forebears did, by horse and 'vardo' or gypsy wagon - that round gypsy cart. Catherine Johns was raised in the traditional gypsy or Romani manner.

Catherine Johns now lives on a property in South Australian mallee district called Artemis, which is an artists' retreat, organic farm and home for rescued animals.

Red Catherine Johns and I exchanged copies of our books years ago - we found we had so much in common. Our stories took place on two separate continents, but you know how stories do and unite us all.
