A typical pattern of Edo Kiriko "Yarai".
It is one of the very auspicious traditional patterns that are said to "make the foundation of things" and "solidify the foundation", which refers to the shape of bamboo and logs that are alternately assembled.
It is said that "Edo Kiriko" was first carved on the glass surface with Kongo sand in 1834 (Tenpo 5) by Kyubei Kagaya, a Biidoro shop in Odenma-cho, Edo. In the Meiji era, the European cut glass technique was adopted, and it became the "Edo Kiriko" that has been handed down to the present day.
"Edo Kiriko" was designated as a traditional craft of Tokyo in 1985 and as a national traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2002.
