SYNOPSIS ....
The English version of a popular Slovenian story translated by Maja Visenjak Limoncellos and David
The story of the stalwart countryman Martin Krpan from Hilltop by Holy Trinity in Inner Carniola was written almost a hundred and fifty years ago by the Slovene poet, writer, critic and linguist Fran Levstik.
Martin Krpan is a fictional character created on the basis of the Inner Carniolan oral tradition by the 19th-century Slovene writer Fran Levstik in the short story Martin Krpan from Vrh (Slovene: Martin Krpan z Vrha). Published in 1858 in the literary journal Slovenski glasnik, the popularity of the story led to it becoming a part of Slovene folklore and made its lead character a folk hero.
About the Author
Fran Levstik was a Slovene writer, political activist, playwright and critic. He was one of the most prominent exponents of the Young Slovene political movement.
About the illustrator
Tone Kralj (23 August 1900 – 9 September 1975) was a Slovene sculptor and painter also known for his wall paintings and illustrations
Kralj was born in Zagorica near Dobrepolje in Lower Carniola in 1900. He studied sculpture in prague between 1920 and 1923 and then at Vienna, Paris and Venice. Some of his best-known works are the wall paintings in various churches.
His 1954 illustrations for Fran Levstik's Martin Krpan are also some of the most recognizable images of the story. He won the Levstik Award in 1950 for his illustrations for Pravljica o carjeviču Jeruslanu (The Story of Prince Jeruslan). He died in Ljubljana in 1975.
In 1972 he received the Preseren Award for his life's work.
Very Interesting read!
Reviews
Wonderful … I wish I could have read this short book in its original language instead of its English translation, but I've only been learning Slovene for about four months so even if I tried, it would have been impossible.
Krpan is a plain Slovene man, except for the fact that he is a smuggler of English salt and the strongest man in the Habsburg Empire. One day the Emperor comes across Krpan, notices his incredible strength and years later asks for his help to defeat Brdavs in exchange for whatever Krpan wants.
My professor told us about Fran Levstik and his popular hero Martin Krpan and how important this story is in Slovenia today even if it was written in the 19th century. I think it's key to read about the culture of a country when you're learning its language, that's why I decided to pick up this book. The story is obviously simple, but it comes with a nice message and certainly some good wisdom from the protagonist and the illustrations that come with the text make the reading more exciting.
Marvellous Reading!
