SYNOPSIS ....
Artist Stephen Huneck shares the story of his long illness and near-death experience which inspired him to build a chapel for dogs and their owners near his home in Vermont, and presents photographs of the chapel, as well as woodcut prints that celebrate the loving qualities of dogs.
In celebration of the bond between humans and their canine companions, The Dog Chapel gives readers an introduction to Stephen Huneck, his woodcuts and sculpture, and the chapel he built for dogs in St Johnsbury, Vermont, USA.
About the Artist
Stephen Huneck is the author of My Dog's Brain, a humorous story that outlines the thought processes of the average dog. Featured are the good and bad hemispheres of a dog's brain fighting for control of such dog habits as drinking water, playing with socks, and taking up room in the bed. Any dog lover will immediately recognize the wisdom found in this book, which is filled with charming illustrations by the author.
Stephen Huneck is a painter and sculptor noted for his meticulous and delightful handcarved pieces. He often incorporates animals, including his own beloved pets, into his art.
Stephen Huneck was the bestselling, award-winning author of seven previous Sally adventures and an internationally acclaimed painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His artwork is in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He lived with his wife, Gwen, and their four dogs in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, near Dog Mountain, where his Dog Chapel is located. His own dog, Sally, was Huneck's inspiration for these books. Huneck died in 2010.
Very Entertaining read!
Reviews
Excellent .. I stumbled on this book by accident, and since I am a "lab lover" I had to have it. Greatest book! I've had to put three labs down over the years, and this is the perfect book for anyone that has ever lost a pet! In the future I plan to give this to any of my doggie friends who are grieving over the loss of their furry partner! Stephen Huneck is great - funny and serious all at the same time with beautiful pictures. Makes you want to take a trip to the actual "Dog Chapel" in Vermont, but alas I live in Georgia, so it's not feasible. Great book and very pleased with my purchase on E-bay. I do believe there are dogs in heaven though - - - Dog lover in Georgia
Five Stars .. I use this book when I lose a good dog friend. My dear old friend, Fred, a Chocolate Lab that lives cross the runway from me is living the last of his beautiful live. This book is for his human Mum and Dad who have loved dear Fred from the time that he was an ackward puppy, falling all over himself. He has lived the best life, flying between here and Colorado, riding with Mum in her little red convertible with the top down, (with his sun visor on, of course) eating special buffalo meat and vegetables for his dinner. Now that he is old and arthritic, he gets acupuncture and massages to make him more comfortable. Last time I visited, he rolled over and begged for his usual tummy rub. The boy still knows how to live the good life!
Gorgeous ... This book takes me back to when I lived near the dog chapel in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The author’s tribute to his dogs and how they saved his life. Stephen Huneck’s artwork is folk art with a dog’s soul.
Sad and sweet … My beautiful, sweet friend bought me this book shortly after we had to put our beloved 80 pound, gentle giant dog, Sadie, put to sleep. This book is beautiful and healing. The illustrations are charming, beautiful and the messages they give are the spiritual bond we share with our beloved 4 legged friends. The tears I cried while reading this book were happy, cleansing tears that brought me such comfort and peace.
The Dog Chapel really does exist on a mountain in St. Johnsbury Vermont. It was built by the author and his wife. In the book there is an empty picture frame, with the word LOVE under where the photo goes. An open-ended sentence reads, " I'll Always Remember This About My Dog: ". You can bet that someday soon Sadie's photo will join the other beloved pets that have passed, on the Remembrance Wall, at the Dog Chapel, in St. Johnsbury Vermont.
This is a fantastic book to keep for oneself or a beautiful gift to give to someone who is grieving over a loss of a dog.
Made me teary … such a beautiful book!
Sweet book …. . the author was very talented and obviously understood the bond between people and dogs.
Magnificent … I love all the Stephen Huneck books I've seen. This one brings back great memories of a trip I took to the actual Dog Chapel in Vermont in 2006.
FIVE STARS … The artwork has that some folksy, pastoral, comforting and cheerful feel about it. This is not a book for intellectually exploring grief and loss and death. The book is simple and simplistic and provides a lot of easy answers and platitudes, which is something I understand. Could be of comfort or be emotional support in times of extreme grief and bereavement from the death of a beloved canine family member.
Marvellous Reading!
