A truly magnificent and highly collectible vintage piece of Santo Domingo Indian jewelry art!
(This style of necklace is very labor intensive to make because the design and type of materials used. The turquoise is hand cut from a big chunk of gemstone, then polished into round tubes. The tubes are then carefully sliced into round discs and polished smooth. accented with hand cut slabs of Mother of Pearl shell. They are then hand drilled with holes to enable stringing into strands of necklaces. This is done multiple times to obtain the various sizes for the graduated effect.)

Necklaces like this were worn at Navajo healing ceremonies that are designed to restore equilibrium to the cosmos.
As part of Navajo religious practices, they are considered to be highly spiritual, sacred, only used at private events.

My 85 yr. old Cherokee Mother closed her jewelry store in 1985, (Kathy's Turquoise Gallery). She & I have just found boxes of her remaining stock, which I will be listing from now till Christmas.
Mother would travel twice a year to the Indian Reservations out West, searching for the most beautiful hand-made Turquoise & Silver pieces to bring back to her store in Bossier City, Louisiana. She had great knowledge about the Tribes and the Turquoise mines. I will tell specifics about each piece if she can remember.
