JOHN PAYNE IS BACK AND AS GOOD AS EVER

John Payne is Major Paul Peterson, an ex-Air Force serviceman who has put together a good civilian life and thinks his flyboy days are behind him - that is, until he's called back into service by friend and former comrade Col. Hughes (Paul Kelly) to help test a new ejection system for high-altitude jet airplanes! Peterson is happy to take on the task, but is disappointed when he finds out he's just backup for younger pilots who are more experienced in the newer jet planes. Fate intervenes, though, and Peterson is moved to the head of the line - but then doubts start to linger in his mind: Is this new technology safe, and does he still have the right stuff to Bailout at 43,000?

An almost totally forgotten picture, Bailout at 43,000 stars the dependable, likable, and always great John Payne as he was winding down his film career. This is a very interesting and engaging story which explores the psychological lives of test pilots - and their families - as they try to juggle their personal lives while facing death on a daily basis. Good cinematography and believable characters serve the story well, and Karen Steele along with Paul Kelly (in what turned out to be his farewell performance) rise to the occasion. The film follows in the tradition of such Air Force films as Strategic Air Command, The McConnell Story, and most of all the William Holden starring film Toward The Unknown which came out the year earlier.
