"Finally, my curiosity was aroused by an apparent contradiction: the sophistication of this gracious old city and its homespun spirit typified by the name 'Beantown.' Being one to purport a certain amount of levity in some of my paintings, the combination of 'refinement' and 'sophistication' with the humorous name of 'Beantown' was too tempting to ignore. This contradiction became the nucleus of my idea for this monumental work entitled: 'Bostonians and Beans.'"
