Exercising her dog at an early hour in the King's Road, Miss Arbutus, a respectable, middle aged spinster, pauses to look into an antique dealer's window and on a regency couch she sees a reclining figure. Little did she know what she was involving herself in when she ran after a policeman and reported her conviction that the figure was a corpse. Six suspects bring fear into her "peaceful" circle and its friendly atmosphere changes into a nightmare as murder lurks behind the familiar faces. Inspector Pobham takes charge of the case, but at times the murderer seems to have made a fool of him. He follows his intuition while Detective Richards sticks only to facts, but there are heart searchings between them as more lives are placed in jeopardy. From film actress' drawing room to country cottage, from Chelsea studio to consulting room, the investigation pursues its course to its unexpected conclusion.
