The magic flutes – melody in porcelain. Music has played a dominant role in the life of Danish artist and designer Bjørn Wiinblad. His art is conditioned by his love of music, which inspires each of his collections and his paintings, often also creating complete sets for opera and ballet. Bjørn Wiinblad had the idea of transforming his favorite opera, Mozart's "The Magic Flute", into a porcelain work and not as a simple decoration but in relief. This transposition was certainly one of the most exciting challenges for model makers and technicians in the history of this material. “The Magic Flute” is a masterpiece of hard porcelain workmanship. Each piece of the service shows a scene from Mozart's opera. To reproduce these scenes it was necessary to create plates with very wide edges. On this porcelain stage Wiinblad tells the story of the opera in MODO detail. Every time there is something new to discover in these scenes. The edges necessarily had to be wider than ever. A special technique was developed to prevent them from sinking during firing. The „Zauberflöte“ service has a peculiarity that is not immediately noticeable: a decoration on the back of the porcelain! Even in the blank edition, each piece of the service features on the back the text of the opera libretto corresponding to the scene shown in relief, with Bjørn Wiinblads' ornamental handwriting decorated in gold. A further peculiarity of this service: the embossed surfaces are not glazed but are smoothed and polished after the second fire processing through an expensive process. Thus the soft and opaque effect of the relief is born in a fascinating contrast with the frosted surfaces. „Zauberflöte“ by Bjørn Wiinblad is a dream work in porcelain, an imaginative and singular synthesis of music and table culture. The „Zauberflöte“ series is produced both in white and with an elegant golden background, „Sarastro“.
