When an oxygen sensor fails, it is no longer communicating with the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU is responsible for strengthening or weakening the fuel delivery through the fuel injectors in order to maintain the most desirable air-fuel ratio, usually close to 14.7 part air to 1 part fuel (14.7:1), also known as the stoichiometric point. When there is no communication between the oxygen sensors and the ECU, the vehicle is programmed to revert to what is known as open-loop mode, in which more fuel is delivered to protect the engine from damage from an over-lean condition. Running in open-loop mode will not only waste fuel, and increase emissions, but will also put undue stress on the three-way catalyst.

1. Make sure your vehicle Year, Make, Model, Engine, and Emission Standard match the vehicle fitment information.
2. Standing at the back of the engine (where the transmission attaches) facing the front (which typically contains the fan belts and pulleys), if the sensor you need is connected to the left side exhaust manifold, choose the Left Bank sensor. If it is connected to the right side exhaust manifold, choose the Right Bank sensor.
3. Select the Sensor 1 or Sensor 2 oxygen sensor according to your sensor location or OBD/OBDII readout.

OBD/OBD-II (On Board Diagnostic) trouble codes
OBD scan tools read the engine Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) and failed sensor locations associated with your vehicle Check Engine Light. Oxygen sensor failures are indicated by P-codes (Power-train codes). Sensor locations are typically given as Bank 1/2 Sensor 1/2/3:

• Bank 1 - The exhaust manifold including the No. 1 cylinder.
• Bank 2 - The second engine head/exhaust manifold.
• Sensor 1 - Located upstream of the catalytic converter (Pre-Cat).
• Sensor 2 - Most often located downstream of the catalytic converter (Post-Cat).
• Sensor 3 - On vehicles with two sensors before the catalytic converter, Sensor 1 and Sensor 2 are pre catalytic converter and Sensor 3 is post catalytic converter.

If you would like to return your new, unopened, and uninstalled part:

5. Select a reason. The most common reason is "Doesn't Fit"

Returned parts will be inspected, and a refund given within 5 business days if the part is new, unopened, and uninstalled. Original shipping costs and a restocking fee may be deducted from your refund.
