Installation Instructions
- Remove factory shifter as per OEM instructions or as below:
1. Jack up car, support on stands and remove lower linkage bolt (12mm) connecting the oem shifter to the gearbox linkage.
2. Remove OEM gear knob and gear boot trim piece
3. Remove lower manual shifter sealer (4x 10mm bolts)
4. Slide rubber shifter boot up to reveal the 4 bolts holding the shifter in place
5. Mark a texta the orientation of the reverse lock out and gold plate - a simple line on both at the 12 o’clock position will do
6. Remove 4 bolts holding shifter onto tripod and pull shifter assembly out
7. Un pack and prepare your new racetune shifter for installation. Have both shifters Side by side as you will use parts of the old one
Racetune Shifter Prep
1. Unpack shifter and fitting kit.
2. Put a dab of grease on the lower bearings in the Racetune shifter. Install lower Pivot Bush into bearing / shifter - ensure that the seals are not damaged.
Factory Shifter Prep
Remove plastic ball joint - you will re-use this if you didn’t buy a new one.
Remove Gold plate - you will use this
Remove Reverse Lockout Plate - you will use this
Remove factory shifter boot cover - you will use this
Racetune Shifter Layering Before install
Start with the bare shifter with the pivot greased and installed as above
Install factory shifter boot cover onto shifter. Some light detergent or similar may help you slide it onto the shifter if your factory one is not torn
Slide reverse lockout plate on - we will align the orientation later
Slide gold plate on - we will align the orientation later
Slide the Square 4 hole spacer on - note the orientation of the semi circle hole - this is to match the gearbox semi circle / plastic bush semi circle hole.
Add grease to ball joint of shifter and slide on plastic ball joint.
Shifter Tripod Prep
There should be a circular gasket with a square cut in it - sometimes these are attached to the factory oem plastic ball joint。 This goes into the tripod housing。 If you dont have one - don‘t worry - it‘s not really crucial。 You can also use an O-ring if your one is damaged。
Install metal ring spacer inside the tripod - with beveled side down。 tap it so it’s level with the tripod base and not tilted.
Racetune Shifter Install
Now that everything is ready, it’s time to install the shifter
Install the shifter to the bolt will go in horizontally. There is only one way you can bolt the shifter up. The shifter can be installed either way - left or right
Place plastic ball joint into the tripod shifter hole and make it sit on the beveled ring
Make sure the plastic ball joint tab is to the right of the shifter - you can see the notch will line up with the one on the tripod. Ensure that alignment.
Slide the spacer ring down with the notch the same as the tripod / shifter - the plastic ball joint will sit in the spacer notch.
Remember the two lines you drew on the gold and reverse lock out ring at 12 o’clock. Align both the gold plate and reverse lockout at 12 o’clock again so you can line up the bolt holes.
Install all 4 bolts with washers into Tripod by shifting the shifter forward and backwards as required to get access. Do not tighten it all up yet - leave a few mm of thread before completely tight
Go under the car and pop the shifter lower ball joint into the clevis. It’s a real tight fit and it must be accurate to slide on - so give it a few goes to get it perfect. You may slightly bend the clevis 0.5-1mm if you need to but in all install cases I have not had to do this.
The clevis must be as it was from facotry - eg: level. Not tilted or skewed before or after bolting or you will have trouble selecting gears.
Align the holes, slide shifter bolt through and tighten up. I recommend using a double nut to ensure that it doesn’t come loose on the track, which tends to happen with OEM shifters.
If you have a lower shifter boot - slide that into position on the tripod.
Back to the top again, your shifter will be now able to engage gears. Tighten the top bolts to OEM specs, around 10nm and check the shifter operation through all gears and reverse. Depress the clutch when changing gears so the sychros can spin into position.
Put a dab of grease on the reverse lockout tab so that when selecting 5-6 there’s minimal friction on the reverse lockout guide.
Test all gears for smooth engagement on a test drive. If they do not engage properly or pop out - you have a lower clevis misalignment and you need to realign that so it has complete throw / distance.
Install top boot over bolts (if you had one)
Install the 4-bolt rubber/metal plate
Install shifter boot and gaiter and gearknob of your choice or us the billet one. Oem gearknob fits.
Enjoy your new shifter with one of the best shift feels on the V160 you’ll have. IF your clutch timing is off under race conditions - adjust the clutch on the master cylinder so you can time everything perfectly under race conditions.
Pro Tip: I use and recommend Royal Purple Synchromaxx gearbox oil with the V160 / V161 to improve shifter feel and performance. New genuine oil installed as well will do the trick, but I find royal purple to hold up to track conditions and heat better.
