These are the 10 shims that go between the pulley halves. If you have less than 10, the pulley may be tight but the outside half is not running true. Extra shims are to be stored on the outside of the pulley to make the pulley tight and to have them when a new belt is installed. For use with all generator and alternator found on 1947 to 1979 air cooled VW bug, ghia, bus with stock engine pulley.
NOTICE: Your generator or alternator should have 10 shims between the pulley halves when installing a new belt. When you install a new belt, you will probably need all 10 between the pulley halves. As the belt wears, you are suppose to move one out from between the halves and store it on the outside of the halves under the cup so you have it when a new belt is installed, Many people put them in the trunk or glove box, and by the time a new belt is needed, the shims are lost.
So they install the new belt only to have the pulley shatter or belt break a short time later. This is because the 2 pulley halves were not parallel to each other, because there were not enough shims in the center. The halves were actually loose, pinching the belt at the top, touching each other at the bottom. The nut got tight because it bottomed out on the inside pulley hub. So you need to keep all of the shims installed on your pulley, inside or outside.
